Breifne College
Flogas LPG saves on energy costs for Cavan secondary school
The School's Energy Challenge
Breifne College is a co-ed post primary school in Cavan town that comprises 30 classrooms, two science laboratories and dedicated practical rooms for home economics, construction and engineering. The school also has a PE Hall, football and all-weather pitch as well as a canteen. The school was using oil boilers for heating purposes but they were nearing the end of their useful life and becoming more inefficient and thereby more expensive to run.
Síle O’Connor, senior building services engineer at Semple & McKillop, part of the design team for a 4800 metre extension project at the college, said “The major extension at Breifne College would have resulted in a very significant increase in energy costs for the school. As the existing oil boilers at the school were at the end of their life, we were able to consider an overall site solution.”
Flogas has been awarded the tender for the supply of LPG to the public service sector by the Office of Government Procurement (OGP) which includes all schools throughout Ireland. The OGP is charged with achieving greater efficiencies and value for money in the procurement of all goods and services for the Irish public service.
The Flogas Solution
A survey conducted by the engineering practice in association with Flogas showed significant potential savings if the school switched from oil to LPG. It was concluded that a move to LPG would yield savings of over €8,000 per annum.
“We calculated that the payback on the costs to convert the system from oil to LPG would be less than two years. The Department gave its approval and the conversion was undertaken in December 2013.” - Síle O’Connor
Another important factor influencing the change from oil to LPG was that oil theft from schools in rural areas is a growing problem. With LPG, the Cavan Monaghan Education & Training Board now has peace of mind that Breifne College’s fuel supply is secure and safe from theft.
